Building Information Model is a common name for a digital representation of the building process to facilitate exchange and interoperability of information in digital format.

BIM can be used to demonstrate the entire building life cycle including the processes of construction and facility operation. BIM is a process which goes far beyond switching to new software. It requires changes to the definition of traditional architectural phases and more data sharing than most contractors are use to. It requires changes to the definition of traditional architectural phases and more data sharing than most architects and engineers are used to.

We at Sierra have adopted Quick Pen® 3D Pipe Designer and other products to create our building models.  We can then transfer the BIM model to the field with the Trimble® MEP Layout survey tools to place deck sleeves and inserts without pulling control measurements.  This increases project control with digital information in the field. These tools allow Sierra to take 3D positional data to the field digitally increasing productivity and accuracy to improve layout processes
